Medical Cannabis for Veterans

Physician Family Medicine

Many veterans live with service-connected conditions such as PTSD, chronic pain and traumatic brain injury. All three are qualifying conditions under the Texas Compassionate Use Program (TCUP). Some studies suggest low-THC cannabis may help with certain symptoms for some patients. Results vary, and side effects and interactions with other medications are possible. Whether you qualify depends on your diagnosis and a physician’s evaluation.

What the VA does and doesn’t do: VA clinicians can’t recommend medical cannabis or complete state program paperwork, and VA won’t pay for it. VA says veterans won’t be denied VA benefits because of marijuana use, and it encourages you to tell your VA provider if you use cannabis so your care can be coordinated. Veterans in Texas can get a TCUP prescription from a non-VA physician registered with the Compassionate Use Registry of Texas, such as Dr. Hill, through a telemedicine visit. Cannabis isn’t allowed on VA property, and VA employees remain subject to drug testing.
